Are you after a display home aesthetic but are working to a strict budget?
Then we have good news! According to design duo Alisa and Lysandra, creating a stylish home doesn’t need to cost you your life’s savings. You just need to know where to start.
‘First homebuyers need to remember that home styling isn’t just about expense. It’s about creativity and resourcefulness, and ensuring you invest your hard-earned cash into the items that matter,’ says Alisa.
Below, Alisa and Lysandra share their top tips for styling your home on a budget:

1. Look for quick wins with DIY home projects
Many fancy design upgrades can easily be turned into ‘do-it-yourself’ (DIY) projects instead. Not only is this usually more cost-effective than buying new, but it also allows you to personalise your space and create true one-off pieces.
‘Timber-look feature wall cladding is a great example of a DIY project that quickly elevates any room. It’s reasonably easy to execute and the materials are quite affordable,’ suggests Lysandra.

Other simple DIY project ideas that provide bang for buck include:
- Create hanging pot plants: Just make sure you place your plants in areas that get enough sunlight.
- Sand and repaint or reupholster pre-loved furniture: A facelift can quickly turn a dated piece into a feature of your living room, bedroom or study.
- Add an open shelf to your wall: This simple addition creates a functional design element and a space to display your décor items. Think fluffy rolled towels in your bathroom or books in your study.

2. Decorate your walls with digital downloads or prints
Art doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars to look beautiful. Digital art prints offer a unique and affordable alternative.
‘You don’t need to visit a gallery or famous studio to find stunning designs for your walls,’ says Alisa.
‘Download high-resolution prints of original artworks from online stores such as Etsy and Desenio. You can then find affordable printing and framing options at stores such as Harvey Norman, IKEA and Kmart.’
Creating a modern interior? Look for abstract prints that incorporate your feature colours. After a more coastal or Hamptons vibe? Opt for coastal photography framed in weathered off-white timber.

3. Use wallpapers to create affordable feature walls
Wallpapers are a simple and affordable ways to create feature walls that tie into your overall look. Use wallpapers to bring pops of a colour, texture or pattern to key spaces.
‘Feature walls help make your bedroom or theatre look high-end and cosy. Wallpapers can be a great way to achieve this look without breaking the bank,’ says Lysandra.
‘Plus, most wallpapers are removable and easy to change – so they’re perfect for commitment-phobes!’

4. Enhance your spaces with elevated accessories
Smart décor choices can quickly elevate your spaces – but that doesn’t mean they need to be expensive. For example, strategically placed mirrors can enhance natural light and create an illusion of space.
‘Pebble- and arch-shaped mirrors are an affordable decorative element that are seriously trending. Just make sure you place them on a wall opposite a window,’ says Alisa.
‘Another fantastic way to add freshness and warmth to your space is through potted greenery! So, head down to your local Bunnings to pick up a plant. Place them in key corners and surfaces of your home.’

5. Upgrade the finishes and furniture that matter
Make sure you get bang for your buck by investing in the finishes and furniture that get the most use.
‘We always recommend investing in high-quality flooring that compliments the overall aesthetic of your home and endures daily wear,’ says Lysandra.
‘Timber-look vinyl and hybrid planks are a really affordable option when compared to timber. Plus, they’re super low maintenance and hardwearing.’
Investing in quality furniture that you use daily is also important. Your couch and dining table, for example, need to withstand the test of time and use.
‘Accent décor such as throw pillows, vases, candles and sculptures don’t need to break the bank! Find budget friendly options at stores such as Kmart and Target. You can also visit your local op shop or vintage store to find unique styling trinkets.’
