Does your New Year resolution include building your first home? Or are you just wanting to revamp your current digs in 2024?

Interior design trends are constantly evolving but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a space that’s not only stylish but also long-lasting.

‘Go with what you love and what fits your home best, not just what’s trending,’ says Alisa. ‘Lean toward timeless choices, blending in ‘trendy’ elements that complement your personal taste.’

So, what interiors can we expect to see in 2024? Alisa and Lysandra share their top interior design trend predictions below:

1. Textured walls

Flat, white walls are out. Textured walls that create interest are in!

‘Textured walls are gaining popularity, adding depth and character to spaces with their tactile appeal,’ says Alisa. Plus, they can disguise dirt and imperfections – perfect for young families.

Textured walls can be applied to a room’s walls without overwhelming the space. They are also perfect for minimalist and modern homes.

For a textured look with a little more impact, this design element can be used on feature walls in your bedroom or theatre.

How to create a textured wall

A textured paint or wallpaper are the cheapest and simplest way to play with this trend. You’ll only need a patterned paint roller, comb or sponge, purchased from your local home improvement shop.

2. Bringing nature indoors

Aussies love the beach and the great outdoors, and the wellness space is seriously booming. So, it makes sense that bringing mother nature indoors is gaining popularity.

‘There’s a clear surge toward a contemporary organic aesthetic, with natural elements taking centre stage,’ says Lysandra, who co-designed Homebuyers Centre’s ever-popular Botanical colour scheme.

Natural light, natural materials such as wood and stone, and potted plants shine in biophilic interior design.

‘Research has shown how nature can enhance our health and wellbeing, increasing productivity and creativity, and reducing stress levels.’

How to bring nature into your home

Let the sunshine through! Stick to sheer curtains and roller blinds to ensure you maximise natural light in your home. Freestanding or mounted wall mirrors can also be used to reflect light and brighten your spaces.

Incorporating timber cladding and wooden furniture in light, natural tones are other relatively inexpensive ways to execute this trend.

‘This is a trend that you can also incorporate into your décor, to make it easier and less expensive to change down the track if you want to,’ adds Lysandra.  Think plenty of potted greenery, bamboo throws and woven baskets, and miniature water features.

3. A new wave of boucle furniture

Boucle furniture has been trending for a while now and Alisa and Lysandra reckon that won’t change in 2024.  This heavy, textured fabric brings an instant high-end yet cosy feel to your living spaces.

‘Boucle will remain a strong contender in design, evolving into thicker, more refined versions in diverse colours,’ says Alisa.

‘This will help it to fit seamlessly in even more interior design schemes, solidifying its enduring presence in Aussie homes.’

How to use boucle furniture in your home

Boucle dining chairs and sofas are popular choices for first homebuyers. But you can also bring boucle more subtly and affordably into your interior. Think boucle ottomans or a feature armchair. Going for a more modern look, such as Homebuyers Centre’s Urban colour scheme? Use sleek black boucle or a statement boucle piece in your chosen feature colour. Beige and cream boucle fabrics fit well in lighter palettes such as Homebuyers Centre’s Coastal scheme.

Just make sure you don’t overdo it! ‘Don’t use boucle everywhere from couches to dining chairs,’ says Alisa. ‘Incorporate one boucle element into your home to create a more tasteful and impactful design.’
