Combining the sleek features of industrial design with the charm of classical farmhouse, industrial farmhouse offers the perfect interior design for those seeking a contemporary home with warmth.

‘By focusing on natural colours and materials, combined with accents of metal and black, you can achieve an aesthetic that feels both relaxed and sophisticated,’ says Display Designer Nadija Saluwadana, who recently implemented the industrial farmhouse style at Homebuyers Centre’s Lawson 25 display home.

‘I took my inspiration from the Hayman façade, with its gabled roof and timber posts providing a nod to the farmhouse aesthetic. I then applied the Homebuyers Centre’s Industrial colour scheme to create a strong, modern façade that sets the tone for what’s inside.’

Here’s a simple guide to help you achieve this beautiful blend of modern and rural in your own home:

1. Stick to a matt monochromatic base

Keep your spaces bright and welcoming with a base of black and white accents. At the Lawson 25, Nadija applied Homebuyers Centre’s Industrial scheme to both the interiors and exteriors.

‘I love the edgy dark kitchen, with overhead cabinetry in Woodmatt Empire Oak and base cabinetry in Cinder. The space feels contemporary,’ says Nadija.

‘The darker elements are broken up with a subway tile splashback in white matt and light-coloured benchtops.’

The trick is to limit any glossy surfaces. ‘Stick to matt finishes wherever possible to keep with the rustic farmhouse aesthetic,’ says Nadija.

2. Contrast wood-look and metal elements

This style is all about blending natural and man-made materials, with wooden elements bringing a sense of warmth and homeliness to your space.

Timber look flooring, like the Industrial colour scheme’s Typhoon Artisan 130 in Cream, is a must in farmhouse designs. ‘Natural Oak cabinetry in the wet areas also helps to bring everything together for a really cohesive home,’ says Nadija.

‘I also incorporated light timber furniture pieces wherever possible.’

For contrast, include metal fixtures and accessories such as pendant lights, lamp shades and cabinetry handles.

‘Don’t be afraid to mix natural and metal elements in the same pieces to create a considered look such as metal legs or trims to heavy wood coffee tables,’ suggests Nadija.

3. Create interest with natural feature colours

To keep your rooms feeling fresh, choose feature colours that reflect the surrounding landscapes and simplicity of rural life. Earthy tones including soft browns, greens, mustards and rust help evoke feelings of calm and comfort.

‘Look for muted tones rather than anything too bold or bright,’ suggests Nadija. ‘At the Lawson 25 display, I incorporated navy into the soft furnishings, throw cushions and half-height feature walls for a modern twist.’

4. Add texture through your soft furnishings

Enhance your sense of comfort by choosing cosy textural furnishings made from linen, cotton and tan leather.

‘Look for soft, natural fabrics rather than plush or opulent materials, such as velvet,’ says Nadija.

‘Farmhouse styles also provide you with the opportunity to play with traditional patterns. I like to use plaid and tartans, checked patterns in throw cushions, bed linen and rugs to create interest in a contemporary way.’

5. Add black to traditional farmhouse shapes

Mix quintessential farmhouse shapes and accessories with black or metal for details your visitors can’t help but notice. For example, cross tapware or classical spindle bedframes in black, or metal pendant lights in traditional cone shapes.

‘Black trimmings are a subtle but effective way to mesh the two styles for a youthful take on classical farmhouse. For example, introducing a black edging to a traditional rattan behead or a black frame to a photograph of a landscape,’ says Nadija.

‘At the Lawson 25 display, I love how the e-zone is carefully hidden behind the kitchen by painted white plantation shutters.’
