Modern country interiors are having a major moment, with this versatile style suiting rural properties as well as it does inland estates. Its appeal lies in its ability to blend rustic charm with modern functionality, offering both comfort and sophistication.
Below, Nadija discusses her top tips for creating a modern country style within your own home.
Modern country styles combine the clean lines of contemporary design with the warmth and charm of rustic, country-inspired elements.
This style inspired the design of Homebuyers Centre’s Kingston 26 display home in Banksia estate. With its proximity to the picturesque coastal country setting of the Surf Coast and the Bellarine Peninsula, I designed the interiors with the surrounding environment and first homebuyers in mind.
1. Look for floorplans with bright and airy spaces
Country-inspired homes are all about a connection to the outdoors. That means lots of space and plenty of natural light.
Consider designs with large windows and sliding doors that seamlessly blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. A layout that encourages flow between rooms will further enhance the spacious, open feel.
My favourite room in the Kingston 26 is the U-shaped kitchen and the way the living spaces open onto the outdoor living area. It allows the natural light to flood the space and create a seamless outdoor-indoor transition.
The sliding window over the kitchen sink is another great example of practicality meets connection to the outdoors. It allows for easy ventilation and offers a beautiful view of the backyard, enhancing the experience when cooking in the kitchen, says Nadija.
2. Build a base of neutrals
A neutral colour palette will ensure your home has longevity. Think whites, creams, beige and taupe, particularly through your hard surfaces. Homebuyers Centre’s Southampton and Urban colour schemes work perfectly.
Nadija’s top tip? Don’t be afraid to use plenty of black.
At the Kingston 26 display home, the Shoreline facade’s modern mid-grey render is paired with painted off-white cladding to create a light, airy feel. The darker elements, such as the window frames and roof, add depth and frame the facade beautifully, says Nadija.
3. Incorporate soft feature colours
Introduce feature colours for personality and vibrancy. Opt for muted tones inspired by nature, such as deep blues, earthy greens or dusty rose hues. You can incorporate these colours through accent walls, statement furniture pieces, artwork, or textiles such as cushions and throws.
A pop of colour in a kitchen island, a vibrant rug in the living room, or a painted headboard in the bedroom can instantly elevate the space while maintaining the modern country aesthetic.
I used indigo blues throughout the home to create a sense of charm and depth. This colour complements the neutral base palette while adding a bold, serene contrast. Artwork featuring this hue ties the spaces together, giving each room a cohesive and curated feel.
The children’s room is a great example, featuring paint from the Dulux 2024 Colour Forecast – Solstice. This room is designed to be playful and imaginative, using two contrasting colours: Dulux Tan Wagon – a warm, earthy tone – and the bold, vibrant shade Dulux Pure Blue.
4. Build in natural materials
To keep with the country theme, embrace natural materials, particularly in your furniture. The hero finish? Wood or timber-look materials.
Wicker chairs, wool rugs and linen bedding are other classic additions to a country-inspired home. Consider layering different textures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, adding depth and comfort to every room.
I love the use of the half-height VJ panelling used at the Kingston 26 display. This feature serves as both a decorative and practical element – it’s a rustic touch that creates a relaxed, cosy atmosphere, while also serving as a bedhead and a shelf.
You can even add wood elements to your lighting. A black Amphis pendant light over the dining table at the Kingston 26 offers a modern statement piece, while its shape and material adds a touch of country charm.
